David Warsofsky was watching the World Cup dreams of the US National Soccer Team slip away against Ghana on Saturday afternoon when his phone rang. Little did he know that his own dream was waiting on the other end of the line.
It was his advisor, with news that he had been traded to the team he grew up not only watching, but also dreaming of one day sporting the black and gold jersey for himself: the Boston Bruins.
“Just growing up and watching all the Bruins that came through the system over the years, it’s an honor to put on the same sweater as them and be part of the same organization as them,” said Warsofsky.
The Marshfield native has had a phenomenal year and a half. He won the 2009 NCAA Championship with his fellow Boston University Terriers his freshman year, before going on to win a gold medal with the U20 US team at the Junior National Championships. Just weeks later, he had the honor of skating at Fenway Park (50 seconds in, Warsofsky’s great goal celebration), home of his favorite baseball team, as part of the Winter Classic game between BU and the BC Eagles. Superstitions are a funny thing in baseball. Some believe in them; like the broadcaster who won’t mention an ongoing no-hitter, the fan who sits in the same chair for every game, or the slugger who doesn’t change his underwear during a long hitting streak. Gross.
There are also those who think superstitions are ridiculous; that they’re just variance in the grand scheme of randomness that is the world.
But no matter what you believe, one thing is pretty clear about the Red Sox in 2010: There’s no lucky rabbit’s foot hanging in Fenway Park.
The Red Sox have been absolutely bitten by the injury bug this year. Thanks to Victor Martinez’s broken left thumb, eight players from Boston’s Opening Day roster have made 10 different stints on the disabled list. That doesn’t even include Boof Bonser, Jed Lowrie and Junichi Tazawa, who were all placed on the DL prior to the start of the season.
This past weekend in San Francisco, the Red Sox lost a star player in each day of their three-game set with the Giants.
I don’t like to make war references, but this is almost like the second coming of the Boston Massacre.
And yet, the Sox [...]

Clay Buchholz and I have a few things in common. We both live in Boston, but didn’t grow up here, we’re both dashingly good looking, and we’re both making $443,000 plus incentives in 2010.
OK, so only two of those three things are true. But when I came to Boston in the fall of 2007 to start my journey at Emerson College, Buchholz was also taking a giant leap towards embedding his stamp on Beantown.
I remember it like it was yesterday. The night before I moved into college, I was sitting in a Hamden, Ct. hotel room, impatiently waiting for morning to come so I could take the final leg of the drive into the next chapter of my life.
I turned on the TV at around 9:30, and flipped to the Sox game. And there, standing on the mound as a 22-year-old rookie in just his second major league start, Buchholz was in the midst of making history.
With two outs in the ninth inning, and two strikes on Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis, Buchholz froze Markakis with his patented hook, and became just the third pitcher since 1900 to throw a no-no in his first or second [...]

The Boston Celtics were the best basketball team on the Staples Center floor for the first 36 minutes of game 7 of the NBA Finals. But NBA games are 48 minutes long and the Celtics ran out of gas in the 4th Quarter and the Los Angeles Lakers took advantage to win their second consecutive NBA Title with an 83-79 win.
Coming into the game rebounding was a major key to the series and the Lakers dominated this category the entire game. But the Celtics were still able to maintain a lead most of the way despite LA’s dominance on the boards. The Lakers outrebounded the Celtics 53-40, and 23-8 on the offensive glass.
Heading into game 6 with a 3-2 lead and into this game many speculated who would be the MVP of the series if the Celtics won. Well, the fact that answer was never clear ended up killing the Celtics in the final quarter. The Celtics needed someone to step and make shots down the stretch but no one made it happen. The ball movement wasn’t there and the offense became extremely stagnant. Rajon Rondo came 2 [...]

The Celtics have known all along that Kobe Bryant would erupt for a huge game at some point during this series. That eruption came in game 5 as Bryant poured in 38 points, half of them coming in the 3rd Quarter. But the Celtics delivered a brilliant team effort and took the lead in the NBA Finals 3 games to 2 with a 92-86 victory at the TD Garden.
While the contributions of the Celtics bench was the story of game 4, the starters were the key to game 5 as “The Big 3” and Rajon Rondo were all in double figures. Paul Pierce led the way with a dazzling 27 points. He shot 12-21 and hit two three’s. Pierce played like it was 2008 all over again and is now hoping his team can celebrate like it’s 2008 with one more win.
“We’re in a good spot. We have two games in L.A.,” said Pierce. “Now we have to get one.”
Kevin Garnett was terrific scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Garnett was dominant on defense with 5 steals and 2 blocks. Rajon Rondo chipped in with 18 points and 8 assists and Ray Allen worked [...]

I was wrong.
With the 4th Quarter beginning I turned to a few of my esteemed colleagues who were with me at The Garden and I said, “I don’t like this lineup for the Celtics to start the 4th.” The lineup consisted of Nate Robinson, Tony Allen, Ray Allen, Glen Davis and Rasheed Wallace. Woops, I’ll take a mulligan on that one.
This unit turned the tide of the game and maybe the series as the Celtics tied up the NBA Finals at 2-2. Down 62-60 to start the quarter, the Celts jumped on the Lakers with a 10-2 run to go up 72-64. The heart and hustle of this unit was unbelievable. Big Baby was in his words after the game, “a beast.” He poured in 18 points, 9 coming in the 4th. Robinson is instant offense scoring 12 points but he also played strong defense and made a great steal and called a timeout before he could be tied up for a jump ball. Tony Allen played ferocious defense on Kobe Bryant and even chipped in some gritty offense. And Rasheed Wallace nailed a 3 that caused The Garden roof to almost blow off.
And lets [...]

The 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off tomorrow! If you’re not lucky enough to be going to watch it in South Africa (like me ) don’t worry because there are tons of great events and bars around Boston where you can watch the games. Also, this year the US actually stands a chance of doing well, so make sure you don’t miss this.
While any Irish Pub, Brazilian Cafe, North End Bar, or Sports Bar in general will likely be showing at least some games, here are some Boston favorites, ALL OVER BOSTON, that are sure to offer a positive World Cup viewing experience. Also, most of these are opening up at the crack of dawn for the early games.
House of Blues. Lansdowne, by Fenway. The House of Blues is having a World Cup Kick Off event on June 12. Sponsored by World Cup Boston, you can meet the New England Revolution players, probably some Boston Breakers players, and win free stuff. Opens at 10 am and goes all day for all the games (but the important one is US vs England). Apparently 2,000 people will be there.
Game On. Brookline Ave near Fenway. Opening at [...]
