Yesterday, was a great day for Boston Sports, as all of their teams got W’s, some more important than others. Here’s a recap:
BC Eagles. Won NCAA Hockey Championship 5-0: For the third year in a row, the city of Boston owns this trophy. Last year, BU came back from two goals behind to win it, and BC had it the year before. So even more awesome than for Boston, is that BC has won this twice in three years, meaning their Seniors and even Juniors, now have two shiny rings.
The Eagles went 12-0-1 in their last thirteen games, but earlier in the season, not many would have necessarily picked them for winning the big dance, as they still managed to tally 10 losses, 2 coming from foe BU and another from Northeastern.
But alas they did, and they did so big-time. Winning 5-0 in a Championship game is just insane. Wisconsin didn’t stand a chance, and the Eagles proved they not only deserved this, but that they in fact own Commonwealth Avenue. Sorry, Terriers, this a’int your street anymore.
Boston Bruins. Clinch a playoff spot: It’s been a long, painful season, but despite everyones assumptions, the Bruins clinched a playoff berth yesterday. After spending weeks dangling around eighth place and facing injury after injury all season, but Bruins played a game reminiscent of the ‘08-’09 B’s. They looked hungry. Coming into the second period down a man, they rallied for three goals in 64 seconds. WHERE HAVE THESE BRUINS BEEN ALL YEAR? The final score was 4-2, and the B’s moved into sixth. With one game left, they’re safely into postseason.
Red Sox. Hit 5 Home Runs: I’m so happy to be able to say once again, that I am sorry if I ever doubted the Sox offensive capabilities for this season. For a team that was built for its defensive talent, the Sox were an offensive monster last night. Oh, and did I mention that Jason Varitek, in his first start of 2010, hit TWO home runs??! YEAH TEK! And the Sox didn’t do this off any number 4 or 5 starter, they did this off of Zack Greinke, one of the MLB’s best. The final score was 8-3, and the only other thing to say is THANK GOD that drive just missed Beckett’s head. That would have totally killed the mood, and possibly much of our season.
Celtics. They won and it wasn’t even close: The Celtics managed to keep a lead for three straight quarters (gasp) against the Bucks last night, pulling away in the fourth for a final score of 105-90. Paul Pierce scored eighteen points in the second half largely contributing to the victory. They lost to Washington the night before, and had another embarrassing meet with the Knicks a few games back, but this game might show that the Celtics might be getting into playoff mode. And if they do in fact face Milwaukee in the first round (very possible) this is a good game to come off of. However first, they have to beat the Bucks again in the last regular season game on April 14.
Other: Other professional Boston teams put up W’s last night too, making it an overall AWESOME night for Beantown. The New England Revolution won their home opener at Gilette 4-1 against Toronto. Rookie Zach Schilawski scored a hat-trick in an 11-minute span in the second half. Shilawski, welcome to New England. The Women’s Professional Soccer franchise the Boston Breakers, won their season opener against Washington last night 2-1, and the Boston Blazers defeated Minnesota 13-8 in lacrosse.
With all of this going on, how did anyone decide what to watch last night?!
