Red Sox Questions 6-10 of 20

We’ve waded through JD Drew, Jose Iglesias and Marco Scutaro. But what about Papi? What about Lowell? Ellsbury? Wakefield and Buchholz?
Patience, young ones.
Without further ado, I present to you the real top questions facing the Sox this season. Starting with mumbers 6-10. The questions that will make or break Boston’s Boys of Summer. Feel free to comment, question or be angry below.

10. How will the move to left field effect Jacoby Ellsbury? Should he be offended? (Greg; Townsend, Mass.)
It really shouldn’t offend or affect him at all. What it will do, however, is make left field at Fenway a very difficult place to get hits.
Jason Bay was a very solid fielder – not much range, but if he got to the ball, he was going to catch it. Jacoby on the other hand, has all the range in the world, and should look like Carl Crawford flying around out there. He’s going to turn a lot of bloop-singles into outs, and the fact that left fielders already play in close in Fenway because of the Monster makes it that much more exciting of a prospect.
Cameron’s a proven glove-man in center field. And the move to [...]

March Madness Madness Madness

March 24th, 2010 admin No comments

Define madness.  It could be third seeded Georgetown, after a promising run to the Big East conference championship game, losing to Ohio University in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.  Maybe it’s Villanova being overmatched by St. Mary’s big center, Omar Samhan, and losing in the second round.  The craziest of all could be the top overall seed in the tournament, Kansas, losing to ninth seeded Northern Iowa in the second round.  The first time a number one seed has lost before the sweet 16 since 2004.
In a year where almost anything goes in college basketball, the NCAA tournament has been everything that has defined the term March Madness.  Take this on for size; the Big East has widely been considered the best conference in college basketball for about two years running.  They sent eight teams to the tournament.  By the end of the weekend, only two were left standing and five of the six were beaten by lower seeds.
So much for any kind of harmony, especially when all four number one seeds made the final four for the first time in the history of the tournament two years ago, and the fact that [...]

Just when you thought they were done…The Celts pull out something big

Just when you thought it was time to write them off, they pull you back in.  Just when you figured they were too old, they show that with age comes experience.  Just when you conclude they can’t beat the best teams in the league, they come up with a signature win in Big D.
Last night the Celtics came up with a huge road win over the Dallas Mavericks.  They led most of the way and unlike most of the season; they didn’t wilt in the 4th Quarter against a tough opponent.  Instead they hit big shot after big shot.
The Celts shot 12-17 from the floor in the 4th and Rajon Rondo went 5-5 in the quarter.  Rondo finished with 20.  Paul Pierce led the way with 29 and Ray Allen chipped in 21.
The win was the 4th straight for Boston.  They now sit in 3rd in the Eastern Conference.  So are they back to contender status?  Maybe they never left that perch.  They’ve looked bored for a lot of the season.  But now the playoffs are finally in sight.  The best time of year for NBA players and fans is right around the corner and [...]

Patriots v. Jets in Off-Season Moves. Who’s looking ahead?

March 21st, 2010 admin No comments

Last season the two top teams in the AFC East were the division champion New England Patriots and the New York Jets.
In the playoffs the Patriots burned out fast, getting blown apart at home by the Baltimore Ravens. Meanwhile the wild card Jets surprised everyone by making it to the AFC Championship game before bowing out to the Indianapolis Colts.
The two teams seem to continue to be going about their business differently in the offseason.
The Jets, feeling they are on the brink of the Super Bowl have made a splash and added a few talented players to the mix in an effort to push them over the edge.
Meanwhile the Patriots, as per usual, have not gone out and paid big bucks for any free agents and have sat mostly quiet just bringing back their own players that were out of contract.
Two distinctly different styles, but which is the right way to go about business?
The Jets, who also made a big in-season trade acquiring wide receiver Braylon Edwards, brought in two very sexy names in the NFL: cornerback Antonio Cromartie and running back LaDanian Tomlinson.
Cromartie came to the Jets by trade for a conditional third round [...]

Red Sox Questions 10-15

March 20th, 2010 admin No comments

The 2010 Red Sox season presents many questions. Of the top 20, here are numbers 10-15.
15. What are the chances of the Red Sox getting Adrian Gonzalez at the deadline, and what would they have to give up to get him? (Eric; Amherst, MA)
You’ve got to think the chances are very high; and a big part of that is because the Sox kept their wallet closed when it came time to reel in the big sluggers this offseason: Jason Bay or Matt Holliday.
Think about it – the Red Sox really didn’t grab a big bat this offseason. And that’s probably because they’re waiting a few months to do so. After all, we all know a hefty slugger was on Boston’s grocery list – and this front office has shown time and time again that they get what they want.
Not only that, but the Sox also did a nice job in holding on to both Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard (especially in the V-Mart trade), both of which could prove vital in a swap with San Diego somewhere down the line.
On top of that, this year, unlike last, Gonzalez is entering the final year of his [...]

Pats sign Alge Crumpler

March 19th, 2010 admin No comments

By Phillip Shore
Reports from the Boston Globe and Boston Herald say the Patriots have found their new tight end. That guy is four-time Pro Bowler Alge Crumpler.
The 32-year-old tight end gives the Patriots some much needed experience and depth at the tight end position after letting Benjamin Watson go to the Cleveland Browns and releasing his backup Chris Baker.
In his earlier years with the Atlanta Falcons Crumpler was regarded as one of the better pass catchers at his position as well as being a good blocker.
However, his receiving numbers have been on a steep decline since 2006 and he has become more of a one-dimensional player.
In 2006, the last time Crumpler was a Pro Bowler, he caught 56 passes for 780 yards and eight touchdowns. Since then his numbers have become almost anemic. In the subsequent three seasons his receptions totals have dropped to 42, 24, and 27, for 444, 257, and 222 yards, and five, one, and one touchdowns.
Still, Crumpler is extremely durable missing only five regular season games in his nine year career. He is also still considered a very strong, physical blocker, and was a major factor in Titan’s running back Chris Johnson rushing for over 2,000 [...]
