Signing Day: Eagles finally fill the quarterback void

The Boston College Eagles may have lost the Rose Bowl to the USC Trojans this past season, but they got a little revenge after winning the recruiting battle for four-star quarterback Chase Rettig.

Not a moment too soon either.  The Eagles have seemingly been lost after quarterback Matt Ryan got drafted by the Atlanta Falcons two years ago.  After a season of rotating freshman quarterbacks into the starting position, the Eagles are hoping that Rettig can fill the void left by Ryan, even if it may not be right away.  The 6’3 quarterback out of Sierra Madre, Calif., chose the maroon and gold over Lane Kiffen’s current team, the Trojans, and his former team, the Tennessee Volunteers.

According to ESPN, Rettig is a “big athlete with a big arm…with excellent athleticism to make plays with his legs when he needs to.”  A big part of what the Eagles were missing this season.

To help Rettig’s transition into the ACC, the Eagles were able to grab wide receiver Shakim Phillips from Wayne, NJ.  The 6’2 four star prospect is “a big, good looking prospect with long arms and quality straight-line speed…has very reliable hands both above his head and extending away from his frame.”

Other than Rettig and Phillips, however, it was a day to forget for Boston College as the Eagles were ranked as the ninth best recruiting class in the ACC and given a grade of C+.   Other big signings include outside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis (four stars) from Stamford, Conn., offensive tackle Seth Betancourt (three stars) from Riverside, Penn., and wide receiver Bobby Swigert (three stars) from Louisville, Ohio.

However, BC rarely ever has a recruiting class that stands out like big time programs such as Florida or USC.

“Boston College has continued to win without top-25 classes, and this 2010 follows that pattern,” reported Scouts inc.  “There are some upper tier prospects in this class and a few under-the-radar prospects like usual whom the Eagles will develop into great football players.

Case in point, former ACC defensive player of the year and defensive captain Mark Herzlich was the 26th ranked linebacker coming out of high school and Matt Ryan was the 25th ranked quarterback of his class.  Both were only given three stars.

BC has proved time and again that with good coaching and player development, they are able to compete in the ACC almost every year.  These Eagles prove that a little hard work goes a long way.
