Just to make us feel better this weekend when the Pat’s aren’t playing.
A lot of hometown sports media has been getting down on the Pat’s over their season-ending loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy said “In the end, they’re mere mortals.” Fans of the New England Patriots are obviously let down over the seasons end, and no one will be surprised to see “changes” on the defense staff, but this is still a Patriots team who will forever be known as having tied the record for three Superbowl wins in four years, and having the longest winning streak in the NFL.
More importantly, history will show that Bill Belichick’s Patriots were a more historically significant team than any of the so-called franchise’s still hoping to open for The Who at Dolphin Stadium on February 7th.
Bret Favre is hoping to grab one last Superbowl ring in the hopes of somehow justifying a “career comeback” that has burnt the bridge with the people who’ve made him a legend.
No matter what happens with the Colts, the fact will always remains that Peyton Manning is, first and foremost, a credit card salesman who was bred to play football as though he were bred to be farming equipment, and it will take more than a Superbowl win to pay off the new space-age Cowboy Stadium that has Dallas Fans paying more per ticket than any NFL fan.
The biggest problem the San Diego Chargers face is that of extinction. They could make it all the way and come back to a victory parade and the next day be annihilated by a massive earthquake, taking place along existing fault lines that will supposedly separate Southern California from the Continental United States.
The Ravens stand a chance of winning a Superbowl victory the same year that on-air advertisement slots have deceased in price. Nothing against The Who, but they’re another “safe” classic rock act, following in the footsteps of The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers who’ve been counted on to keep things controversy-free following Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” that shocked prude eyes prior to the second Superbowl victory in 2004.
No matter what happens in Miami, come February, no team stands to bring home close to what the Patriots have brought back to New England, and the fans of whatever team wins, will not be able to experience the joy that Pat’s fans have gotten to feel. May the best team win, but odds are whomever wins will likely still suck.
