Perhaps this writer should think twice about calling BC’s season over before it had barely begun. After five games against ACC opponents, the Eagles are sitting just one game under .500 at 2-3. Wait, scratch that.
If the team from Chestnut Hill could play the University of Miami Hurricanes every game this season, they probably would. The Eagles have now won their two ACC games against Miami. After losing three games last week (Clemson, Duke and Maryland, in case you missed my last article) by a combined score of 52 points and not breaking the 60 point barrier at any point of the week, junior forward Joe Trapani wouldn’t have any more of it as he led the way with 31 points.
The best part of the game (for BC fans, at least) was not just the fact that the Eagles won. They finally showed some heart doing so. For the first time in a long time, the team finally looked like they actually wanted to be on the court. They looked like they actually wanted to win. Most importantly, they looked hungry and they played hungry.
The game looked like the typical BC basketball game this season as the Eagles trailed by 17 points (58-41) with just over fifteen minutes left, and based on the way the team has looked this year, nobody would have blamed anyone for giving up at that point.
Then, it was like someone flipped a switch. Maybe Al Skinner paged some maintenance people to turn on some lights; a light switch that had been stuck the entire year.
Sophomore guard Reggie Jackson saved his best for last and scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, which included a 22-7 run. When the final buzzer rang, BC came out on top 79-75.
The Eagles have always had the talent to have a strong season, even in the highly competitive ACC, but the team had not shown it all year. Not until Tuesday night at least. If the Eagles play with the intensity and heart that they showed in the last fifteen minutes against Miami, then maybe a miracle can happen. Then again, the question is if the team’s season can really be assessed after playing a team they were tied for last with in the ACC. Let’s be realistic, though, the tournament is still a far reach but the NIT may actually be attainable, yet still a stretch.
The Eagles are at Virginia Tech on Saturday, hoping to start a winning streak.
