Just when hockey fans thought it was all over.  The hometown Boston Bruins had defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime to take the crown in the 2010 Winter Classic on New Years Day.  Then NCAA hockey did something just as great.  They gave fans Duke and UNC.  Well, at least the college hockey version of it.

Duke and UNC have been college basketball rivals for as long as most people can remember and are separated by just eight miles on Tobacco Road.  Boston College and Boston University are just down Commonwealth Ave, but hockey is where their hearts lie.

In a rematch of last years national championship game, BU once again got the best of BC in front of the beloved Green Monster and in front of over 38,000 screaming fans and took the game 3-2.  The story was not so much the game itself, however, but instead where it was being played: an iced over Fenway.

“It was really a terrific venue for the BC-BU rivalry. And I think it was a terrific atmosphere to play a game in,” BC coach Jerry York said through ESPN.  “We told our team prior to the game that it’s going to be a memorable experience for both teams but it’s going to be a significant experience for the team that wins. It was a terrific experience, but we lost the game.”

The game was everything that the fans at Fenway Park hoped for as BU goalie Kieran Millan made 27 saves including 12 in the final period to keep the game from going into overtime.

“It’s something we’ll all remember as long as we live,” BU coach Jack Parker said through ESPN. “It was quite a show. We played pretty thorough, and it was one of our better games in terms of being smart with the puck. I thought we played a very solid game from start to finish.”

The win has been one of few bright spots in the Terriers repeat championship hopes as the team has struggled this year going 6-9-3.  As for the seventh ranked Eagles, it was their third loss in a row as their season record falls to 10-6-2.

“Just when hockey fans thought it was all over.” Last I checked they announced this game the day they announced the Bruins one. So hockey fans new about it. Maybe it was just you who didn’t.
