Top Red Sox Moments of the Decade

After decades of sleepy Sox fans, Boston finally woke up. The last decade for the Red Sox was more exciting then the 86 years before combined. They took away to Championships and have proved themselves once again to be at the top of the MLB. Here are their 10 best moments of the decade.
10. Sox sweep Yankees 3 in a row: The beginning of the 2009 season looked very good. The Red Sox swept the Yankees three straight times, beating them 8-0. Boston was squeaky clean. Sox fans were basking in the glory, however in the second half of the season the Yankees came back to sweep us twice, and beat us 9 out of 10 games. Then they went on to win the World Series.
9. Sox trade Manny for Bay: In 2008, a very controversial decision at the time, the Sox traded their trouble-making slugger Manny Ramirez, for outfielder Jason Bay. In Bay’s debut, nervous fans were reassured when Bay scored both runs, the second one to win the game in the 12th inning. In 2009, Bay hit 36 home runs. In Manny’s last season with the Sox, he only hit 20, clearly not wanting to be in Boston anymore. Looking back, I think most fans would agree it was a good decision, especially after Manny was suspended this year for steroid use. Unfortunately, the Mets reached a deal with Bay yesterday and he is no longer a Red Sox, but his time with Boston was well worth it.
8. Buccholz No-Hitter: In 2007 in only his second major league start, Clay Buccholz proved his worth, throwing a no-hitter against Baltimore to win 10-0. He was the first Red Sox rookie to do so. He threw 115 pitches with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks.
7. Veritek slugs A-Rod: Now, I am not an advocate of violence, but this has to be one of the best fights in baseball. Not to mention, I am an advocate for anything that will put A-Rod in his place. Not to mention, the guy asked for it, telling Tek to “Come on” several times before Tek did just that: sending leather to his mouth during a game in 2004.
6. Jacoby steals home: In 2009, in a game agains the Yankees, when JD Drew was up to bat, all of a sudden you see Jacoby Ellsbury slide across home plate. He was the first Red Sox to steal home in 15 years and the second player to steal home against Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte. The moment was so much more sweet because it was against the Yankees.
5. John Lester Beats Cancer: In 2006, Jon Lester was diagnosed with the cancer Lymphoma. But the pitcher beat it and came back in 2007 in perfect form, as even the biggest hitters were nothing to fear. In his first post season start, he clinched the World Series win in game four against the Cardinals, and went on to pitch a no-hitter in 2008.
4. Dustin Pedroia: Number 15, is a small guy with a lot of game . The second baseman got AL Rookie of the Year in 2007 when he went on a 13-game hitting streak, and made a diving stop to secure the no-hitter for Clay Buchholz. Then the next season he was named AL MVP when he lead the league with hits, doubles, and runs scored with a batting average of .326. He also won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in his 2008 season.
3. 2007 World Champions: After close to a century of losing, the Red Sox managed to pull out two World Series wins in one decade. In 2007, the Sox had fans on the edge of their seats per usual, as they were down 3-1 to the Indians in the ALCS, one game away from ending their season. But, the Sox won three straight, went on to the World Series, and easily swept the Colorado Rockies.
2. The Ultimate Comeback: In the 2004 ALCS Series, the Red Sox were down 3-0, about to be swept away by the ones they hate the most: the Yankees. Red Sox fans were sure that once again, they would have to wait until next year. But, then the miracle happened. The Red Sox came back to win four straight, taunting the Yankees with “bet you thought you had that in the bag didn’t you?” This is arguably the best comeback in baseball history. The victory sent them on their way to play the Cardinals in the World Series.
1. The Curse is Broken: After 86 years of Championship drought, the Red Sox won a World Series in 2004. Getting to the World Series stage wasn’t easy. The Sox almost didn’t make it through the ALCS Series against the Yankees but the St. Louis Cardinals were no problem. The Sox swept them, and the curse of the Bambino was no more. I would say that hands down, this has to be the Boston Sport Moment of the Decade.
