2009 was more disappointing for Boston Fans than in years past, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t some great moments. That also means there were some awful ones too. Here’s a list of some of the Best and Worst Boston Sports moments of 2009 in no particular order or ranking. Place your votes and we’ll show you the results on the eve of the new year. Dear 2010, may our short Championship-drought End.
Best:
Jacoby steals home against the Yankees’ Andy Pettitte. First time for the Sox in fifteen years. So much sweeter because it was against the Yankees.
Sox sweep Yankees 3 straight times. We took home three brooms in the first half of the season, making us 8-0 against the Yankees.
BU wins NCAA Hockey Title. BU was down 2 goals with a minute left, and came back for the tie, to go on and win in overtime.
Celtics beat Bulls in quarterfinals in game 7. This was one of the most exciting series ever, consisting of four overtime games, game six having three overtime periods. The Celts won game seven 109-99.
Big Baby Davis sinks the winning basket on the buzzer. In the semifinals against the Magic, Big Baby of all people was the hero, tying the series 2-2.
Bruins sweep Montreal Canadiens in quarter finals. The B’s outscored the Canadiens 17-6 in the four game series, making the first round quite a walk in the park.
Tom Brady comes back healthy from knee injury. We were all worried that our Golden Boy just wouldn’t be the same, but Brady is back.
The Bruins have the best record in the Eastern Conference. This came after a horrendous season in 2007, and showed quite a rejuvenation of the team.
Worst:
Sox swept by Yankees. In the second half of the season the Yanks got revenge and beat the Sox in 9 of 10 games, including two sweeps and almost a third. This made the Sox three sweeps earlier in the season not even matter anymore.
Pap blows the save and Sox swept by Angels in ALDS. The Sox always beat the Angels in the ALDS, and this year they got swept. It was just plain embarrassing.
Patriots blow lead on Colts in the last two minutes. The Patriots had this game in the bag the whole game. And their inability to close cost them. Belichick made what some fans have argued to be the worst decision ever to go for it on a 4 and 2, giving the Colts the ball back with enough time to score.
Kevin Garnetts knee injury. When Garnett got hurt, Celtics’ fans back to back Championship dreams were shattered.
Watching the Yankees win the World Series. Nobody can deny the Yankees were unstoppable this season. But I think Boston would rather see ANY OTHER TEAM win. Now we can’t say, “Oh, where are your rings from this decade?”. I’m not linking this. I never want to see it again.
Finding out Big Papi did Steroids. It was funny when it was A-Roid. But when Manny and Ortiz were discovered, people starting saying our World Series weren’t legitimate. And, of all people, Big Papi had been speaking out against steroids the most.
Bruins Stanley Cup dreams coming to a hault. The B’s were knocked out of playoffs in the semis against Carolina in game seven after having the best record in the conference.
BC baseball loses to Texas 3-2 in record setting 25 inning game. The NCAA playoff game lasted seven hours. If your going to spend seven hours on a baseball field, you better not blow it. Especially in the NCAA’s.
