Too many 3’s by Wallace?

Rasheed Wallace has been a starter his entire career.  He’s always been one of the top players on his team and a dynamic force on both ends of the court.  In Boston he no longer can claim a spot in the starting lineup of his team, however, Wallace has adapted well to his role off the bench for the Celtics.

As expected, he has provided a great spark both offensively and defensively.  The 35-year-old seems quite content to come off the pine and play 20 to 25 minutes a night.  He had his best effort of the season last week against the 76ers when he poured in 20 points, hitting 6 three-pointers.

However, his apparent addiction to the three point shot has been alarming.  Last Friday night as I was watching the game against the Suns, my brother sent me a tongue-in-cheek text message asking, “has Rasheed attempted a two-pointer all year yet?”

The answer is yes he has taken two-point shots.  Wallace has attempted 75 shots total this season and is shooting 40%.  Fifty of those shots have been threes.  He’s shooting 34% from downtown.  But Wallace went 0-4 from international waters on Saturday against the Nets.

Now it’s true the Celtics played eight games in the first 12 games of the season, the most by any team in the league.  So perhaps Wallace’s legs were tired.  But he’s only playing about half a game right now.
Having a big man like Wallace that can shoot the three- ball is a great weapon to have.  It can spread the court by bringing his defender away from the paint.  He shouldn’t stop shooting the three.  But, something has to give.  Two-thirds of his shots have been three-pointers.  That’s too many.

Perhaps Doc and KG need to stage a three-point intervention with Wallace.  Get him to cool down on the chucking.  Boston hasn’t seen someone firing this many threes since Antoine Walker was hoisting them not too many years ago.

To three or not to three?  The answer, Rasheed, is to keep shooting the three, but in moderation. Throw some two’s in there too.

Do you think Rasheed is hitting too many threes?

The only person who shoots a higher percentage of 3’s in relation to total field goal attempts is yours truly in the Dallas Wednesday night JCC league.

We all know Dan Massar has absolutely no problem with 3’s. Matter a fact, if he were commissioner of the Association I think he would ban any shots from within the 3 point line.
