Who Sox Fans Should Root For in Postseason (since we’re not in it)

We’re out of the playoffs. But we might as well choose someone else to root for, or just someone to boo. Here’s my Sox fan’s guide to picking a secondary team to win the World Series.

There are four teams left. The New York Yankees, The LA Dodgers, the LA Angels, and the Phillies. So far, the Dodgers and Phillies are tied 1-1 in their ALCS series, and the Yankees lead the Angels 1-0. So, it’s still anyones game.

Lets start with the obvious: The Yanks. Absolutely not, is it okay to root for them. I don’t care if you think they are the best team and will win the World Series (because there is a very good chance they are and will) but it is like breaking the code of Red Sox Nation to root for the Yankees. You should all know this however, I don’t think I need to expand.

Now the Dodgers. The number one reason not to root for the Dodgers is to not see Manny win a World Series in a non-Sox uniform. Not only do we not want him thinking he’s better off without us, but we don’t need to be thinking we were better off keeping him. There is no denying that we are missing him a little bit, especially with the way our hitting was inconsistent at best this season, and then nonexistent in playoffs, when Manny tends to dominate. However, do we really miss his attitude or his antics? No. So, lets take pleasure in seeing him unsuccessful elsewhere.

The Angels. This one is tough. You never want to root for the team that swept you out of playoffs. But come on, you’ve seen the T-shirts. “I only root for two teams: The Red Sox, and whoever is playing the Yankees.” I think we would all take much more pleasure in a demise of the pin stripes. Maybe we should give the Angels some credit. They’ve really stepped it up. If they swept us, they must be a good team. It’s also easiest later on to say your team got knocked out by the Champions, not the runner ups (see last years ALCS against the Rays).

And then there are the Phillies, my choice for the Wold Series. You have to respect them. They are a good solid team, and you have to give props to any team that can win it two years in a row. The question is, Can they? I’m not sure it’s their year again to be honest. But overall, I don’t have any beef with them. The Sox don’t have a history of a rivalry with them, and I don’t associate them with any terrible memories of 86 year curse-starting trades, or being knocked out of the playoffs (See my hate for the Yankees, Rays, and now the Angels.) Also, might as well keep it east coast.

There’s no doubt this is the toughest postseason for Sox fans in a while. But nothing would make us feel better than seeing A-Roid cry on National Television. So GO any team that can make that happen.

Since we're out of playoffs, who are you rooting for?

I say go for the Dodgers. If any of the other three win, they would match the Sox for World Series titles this decade, thus taking away from the Sox’ chances of being called Team of the Decade.

Also, wouldn’t it be great to see Joe Torre go back to the Bronx and teach the younger Steinbrenners and the Evil Empire a lesson? Although I just assume the sooner the Yankees lose, the better.

And while we have no rivalry with the Phillies… it’s Philadelphia! How could anyone want to see their fans celebrate again??

Go Philly! – My T-Shirt say’s it all: I root for two teams, the Red Sox, and whoever is playing the Yankees.
