Rasheed-Wallace-Boston-Celtics-psd32003

Yawn.  Sorry, I was just thinking about how boring the preseason is.  The Celtics preseason has begun and now that the excitement of seeing the team back on the court has worn off, it’s hard to get too excited about preseason action.  The games don’t count in the standings and in most games the core players don’t see a lot of action.

But pre-season is a necessary Yawn-fest.  For the Celtics it’s allowing the team to get used to Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels.  It’s giving Kevin Garnett a chance to get back on the floor to work out all of the rust after his injury. In Wednesdays game against Toronto, Garnett had 16 points, and 6 rebounds.  Rajon Rondo is showing that he’s ready for a big season after a tremendous performance against the Nets last Sunday in which he scored 18 points and dished out 13 assists.

The Celts have played five of eight preseason games, their next on Sunday against for a second match against the Raptors. And while scores don’t matter, it’s still nice to know that after losing in the pre-season opener to Houston, the Celts have won all of the other four.

The preseason has also given new Celtic Rasheed Wallace a chance to make some headlines.  He told a reporter recently that he thinks the Celtics can top the NBA record 72 wins that the 95-96 Chicago Bulls hold.  Celtics fans have to like the confidence Wallace is showing in his squad.  Is it possible though, for the Celts to win over 70 games?  As Kevin Garnet once said, “Anything is possible!!!”

Don’t count on it though.  Doc Rivers should be looking to give his veterans plenty of rest throughout the season.  The Celtics are focused on winning a championship not winning 70 games.  They want to be fresh for the postseason, not worn out from trying to chase down MJ and his single season wins record.

Wallace’s bold talk has at least made the preseason a little more interesting.  Don’t worry though, in less then two weeks the real season tips off against Cleveland. It can’t come soon enough.  Anybody got a red bull?

You are right on with the Celtics not needing to worry about 72! A more important goal would be the best record needed to secure homecourt advantage.
An interesting question would be …. What’s more important: Homecourt Advantage or Well Rested Veterans?

I’ll take the Well Rested Veterans! I’m looking forward to opening the season against the Cavaliers.
