Celts blow past Cavs, and KG is back, diminishing Celts fan’s biggest fear

By: Jess Lander, YawkeyTalkies Editor in Chief
The Big Three outdid the highly anticipated Duo of LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neil on the Cavs’ turf in the NBA season opener Tuesday night. The Celts put an end to their 11-game losing streak in Cleveland by defeating them 95-89, a big difference from the 31-point Boston massacre on their last meeting.
What could possibly be the reason for the turn around?
Sorry Shaq, but there was someone more important than you on your Cleveland debut because KG is back.
All hints of a season-ending injury gone. Celtics fan’s biggest worry, gone. If last night’s game against a fellow title contender indicated anything, it’s that 2010 can very likely be the 2008 remix.
Garnett added 13 points and ten rebounds to the mix behind the other two musketeers, Paul Pierce with 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Ray Allen with 16 points and ten assists. The possible new inductee to make the power three into an unstoppable four, is Rasheed Wallace who put up 12 points on his own debut.
Superhuman James outscored each with 38 points of his own, including sinking four from outside the three, and eight assists. But just like last season, his effort alone [...]
Patriots Report Card: Pats v Bucs in London: 10/25/09

By: Scott Jackson, YawkeyTalkies Correspondent
The Patriots are riding high as they head into their bye week. They’ve beaten their last two opponents 94-7 after beating the Bucs 35-7 in London.
Quarterbacks:
Yes, he did throw two interceptions. But he also threw for three touchdowns, and finished with a passer rating of 107. He threw for over 300 yards on just 32 attempts. Brady connected on three plays of 30+ yards, and looks like he’s recovered from last year’s knee surgery.
My Grade: B
Runningbacks:
The corps averaged a subpar 3 yards per carry, totaling just 85 (not including rushes by receivers or quarterbacks). This against a Tampa defense that allowed 162 yards per game coming into the contest. The group was nearly non-existent in the passing game; only Kevin Faulk caught the ball. Expect Belichick to work on the ground attack during the team’s bye.
My Grade: C-
Receivers/Tight Ends:
Wes Welker came up big again, catching ten passes for 107 yards. Randy Moss had five grabs of his own. Special teams captain Sam Aiken keeps making strides on offense. His 54 yard catch and go is the Pats longest run of the year. Ben Watson is finally maturing into a legit number one tight end. He made [...]
Mark your Calendars, Top Ten Celts Games to Watch

By: Dan Massar, YawkeyTalkies Correspondent
The Celtics season starts tonight! Lets take a look at the schedule and pick out the best games. Here are 10 key games to watch, starting with tonight’s:
1. October 27 at Cleveland: This is the opening game for the 09-10 NBA season. Not a bad way for the league to open things up. The Celtics begin their quest to regain the championship against a hungry Cavaliers team that added Shaquille O’Neal in the offseason. Could be an Eastern Conference Finals preview. Then again everyone said that last season before the Magic crashed the party.
2. October 30 vs. Bulls: Last time we saw the Bulls they were pushing the Celtics to the brink in a wild 7 game first-round series. It was arguably the best first round series in NBA history. The Bulls could be a team on the rise, though they will miss Ben Gordon who left Chicago for Detroit. The theme of the playoff tilt was overtime. There were 7 overtime periods in the series, an NBA record. So, expect it to be close.
3. November 20 vs. Magic: The first match-up between the two squads since the 7 game second round struggle. It didn’t feature 7 overtimes, [...]
Bruins storm back against Sens, but still seek 60-minute effort

By: Joe Ballway, YawkeyTalkies Correspondent
Down 3-1 to the Senators with under two minutes to play, the Bruins’ fifth loss of the season was inevitable. In fact–loyal fan that I am–I turned off the TV and chucked the remote, feeling I had better things to do on a Saturday night than watch the clock run out on yet another setback in a season marred with perplexing inconsistency. I whined to my sister via text that the Bruins, now a sub-.500 team, were nearly halfway to their loss total from all of last season. After all, they hadn’t shown much fight through their first nine games, so what was there to indicate the possibility of a last-minute comeback?
Of course, being a mercurial, pessimistic Boston sports fan, I disregarded the Bruins’ uncanny ability to claw back into games–a quality that carried this team through so many brilliant stretches last season, but seemed to be absent thus far in the 2009-10 campaign. Some of that magic must still be lingering, though, as I received a text barely a minute later: Mark Recchi goal, 3-2 Ottawa with a minute left. Feeling slightly ashamed, I tuned back in to see if there was a faint glimmer [...]
Top 5 Story Lines for Celtics Season

By: Dan Massar, YawkeyTalkies Correspondent
The NBA regular season is finally here. Our long dark national nightmare is over. The Celtics are of course no longer the defending champions. An injury to Kevin Garnett last season took care of any hope for another title in 2009. The Lakers will be the ones trying on rings Tuesday night.
While that should make you queasy as a Celtics fan, there is reason to be optimistic for the upcoming season. The big three are all healthy and Rasheed Wallace is now wearing green. So without further ado, here are the top 5 story lines for the 2009-2010 Boston Celtics.
5. Jesus Shuttlesworth is in a contract year: Ray Allen’s contract expires after this season. He will also turn 35 in July. While Allen still possesses perhaps the sweetest jumper in the NBA, the mid 30’s are not a kind time for shooting guards. The good news is Allen should be even more motivated this season so he can be rewarded with a contract at the end of the season. He actually performed better last year than in the championship season. He shot 95% from the free throw line and 48% from the field. Throw in 40% [...]
‘Tis the Season for Meriweather

By Ian Tasso, YawkeyTalkies Correspondent
He read the play. He jumped the route. He looked the ball into his hands. He did everything right.
That’s what made it all the more surprising when the pass clunked off his fingertips and fell to the ground. Meriweather blankly stared at his hands in shock. Meanwhile, the clock still read :51, and while the safety’s world stopped, Super bowl XLII went on.
Two plays later, Eli Manning gently lofted a pass high over Ellis Hobbs and right into the hands of a wide open Plaxico Burress. Giants 17, Patriots 14; a shocking end to greatness. A dagger into the heart of perfection.
It could have never happened that way. It should have never happened that way. And for Brandon Meriweather, it almost didn’t.
But for number 31, it was just another small hurdle on the route to greatness – of which he’s faced many.
The hardships started at an early age for Meriweather, whose mother gave birth to him when she was only 13-years old. She then succumbed to the difficulty of raising a son at such a young age, handing over legal guardianship to his high school assistant principle, Mary Bridgeses, and her husband Tom when Meriweather was just [...]
